Liver
The liver is one of the body's most important organs and plays a central role in metabolism, detoxification, hormone balance and energy regulation. It helps the body break down drugs, alcohol and other substances, produces important proteins and bile and stores vitamins, minerals and energy. Blood tests for the liver are used to assess liver function, bile flow and any effects on liver cells. Elevated or abnormal liver values can be seen in cases such as fatty liver, inflammation of the biliary tract, alcohol, drug or other liver diseases, but also in conditions outside the liver itself.
