MR Brain – Dementia Investigation with Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Targeted investigation for specific questions about dementia or cognitive impairment. This is a specialized magnetic resonance imaging examination that is performed exclusively via Evidia. The purpose is to identify structural changes in the brain that may help explain memory disorders, cognitive impairment or suspected dementia. The examination is used as part of the diagnostic process and complements, among other things, clinical assessment, laboratory tests and neuropsychological tests.
With the help of high-resolution images, the radiologist can assess the brain's volume, cortical structures, ventricular system and signs of vascular-related changes. Particular focus is on patterns of brain atrophy and vascular changes that may be compatible with, for example, Alzheimer's disease, frontotemporal dementia or vascular dementia. MRI can also detect other structural causes of cognitive symptoms, such as tumors, cysts, hydrocephalus or previous infarctions.
When can a brain MRI with dementia protocol be relevant?
The examination may be relevant in the event of increasing memory problems, orientation difficulties or other signs of cognitive impairment. MRI does not use ionizing radiation and provides a detailed diagnostic imaging basis for further medical assessment and possible treatment.
- Increasing memory problems.
- Difficulties with language, orientation or problem solving.
- Personality changes or behavioral changes.
- Suspected Alzheimer's disease, frontotemporal dementia or vascular dementia.
- Investigation of cognitive failure with an unclear cause.
What can a dementia examination show?
- Atrophy in the hippocampus and temporal lobes, which can occur in Alzheimer's disease.
- Frontal lobe and temporal lobe atrophy, which can be seen in frontotemporal dementia.
- White matter changes, small vessel disease or previous infarctions that may be consistent with vascular cognitive impairment.
- Hydrocephalus, an increased amount of cerebrospinal fluid that in some cases can cause dementia-like symptoms.
- Other structural changes, such as tumors, cysts or inflammatory processes.
MRI findings are always assessed together with symptoms, medical history and other medical examinations. An MRI examination can therefore provide important information but cannot alone establish a dementia diagnosis.
