In practice, it is therefore common to wonder: does fatigue syndrome appear in blood tests, and what values ​​should be checked? The condition is described as a consequence of severe stress combined with too little recovery, and it can cause both mental, cognitive and physical symptoms for a long time.

What is fatigue syndrome and why does it occur?

Fatigue syndrome does not develop overnight. There is often a longer period of high strain before the body gives up. This can be a job with high demands and low recovery, responsibility for children or relatives, lack of sleep, conflicts, financial pressure or a combination of several stresses at the same time. Many people start with more diffuse signs such as fatigue, sleep problems and gastrointestinal problems, but if the stress continues, the condition can worsen.

Medically speaking, it is about the body's stress system having been activated for a long time. This affects, among other things:

  • the nervous system's balance between stress and recovery
  • sleep regulation and circadian rhythm
  • concentration, memory and mental endurance
  • emotional state, irritability and stress tolerance
  • bodily functions such as pulse, blood pressure, stomach and muscle tension.

It is important to understand that fatigue syndrome is not the same as laziness, lack of motivation or "poor stress tolerance". It is a medical condition where the strain over time has become greater than the body's ability to recover.

Common symptoms of fatigue syndrome

The symptoms of fatigue syndrome vary, but most people recognize that both the body and the brain are affected. The complaints are often both psychological, cognitive and physical.

Common symptoms are:

  • pronounced fatigue that cannot be relieved by rest
  • sleep difficulties, for example, difficulty falling asleep or recurrent awakenings
  • memory and concentration difficulties
  • stress sensitivity, where small demands feel overwhelming

How are blood values ​​affected by fatigue syndrome?

The short answer is: fatigue syndrome has no single blood test that confirms the diagnosis. Blood tests are primarily used to rule out other conditions that can cause similar symptoms, such as anemia, thyroid disorders, diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease, or alcohol-related effects. Laboratory tests are taken because the symptoms are nonspecific and because no typical abnormality is often found that in itself “proves” fatigue syndrome.

However, this does not mean that blood tests are unimportant. On the contrary, they can provide answers to two central questions:

  1. Is there another medical explanation for the fatigue and brain fatigue?
  2. Are there concomitant abnormalities that worsen the symptoms and that can be treated?

Seek medical assessment especially if you have:

  • fatigue that has lasted for weeks to months
  • clear memory or concentration difficulties
  • sleep problems that do not go away
  • palpitations, dizziness or recurring headaches
  • depressed mood or anxiety
  • recurrent sick leave or difficulty coping with work
