PSA is measured to detect prostate cancer. PSA is short for prostate-specific antigen, which is a protein substance, an enzyme, which is naturally found in the body even in healthy men. A PSA test is taken through a blood test.
A PSA test should only be done if it is done regularly as it is only regular sampling that can lead to a reduced risk of suffering from disseminated prostate cancer.
This is how it works: The test is a blood test that is carried out at the selected sampling unit.
Sample response: You normally have a response within 6 banking days after taking the sample. The test answer is sent digitally to your e-mail. Together with your test answer, you will receive a report in Swedish about your values.
To think about: Before booking a PSA test, we recommend that you read the Vårdguiden brochure here ››
Remember: Bring valid identification with you when taking the sample.
Prostate cancer is one of our most common public diseases in Sweden (and in the world), but which before the age of 50 is a rare disease, except for relatives of men who have been affected unusually early. Men over the age of 75 who do not have any symptoms suggestive of prostate cancer may well have a small prostate cancer in and of themselves, but it is unlikely that it will develop into a serious disease during their lifetime.
Men between the ages of 50 and 75 may consider PSA testing even if they do not have any symptoms to suggest prostate cancer.
There are both pros and cons to measuring PSA, where the advantages are, for example, that worry about getting cancer can be reduced or that a serious prostate cancer is detected before it has spread in an early stage, which increases the chance of being cured.
The disadvantages can be, for example, that you receive information about an elevated PSA value even though you do not have prostate cancer, which can lead to other sampling and examinations, or that you receive a cancer diagnosis even though the cancer is so small that you would never sick from it, which in itself can reduce the quality of life with the knowledge that you have cancer.
It is therefore important to decide whether the advantages outweigh the disadvantages before taking a PSA test, we therefore recommend that read the Vårdguiden's brochure here which covers these and that you can then make a conscious choice about testing your PSA levels.PSA stands for prostate-specific antigen and is a protein substance, an enzyme, that both sick and healthy men naturally have in their bodies. The production of PSA takes place in the prostate gland, some of the produced PSA leaks into the blood, which means that even perfectly healthy men can also have small amounts of PSA in the blood.
In prostate cancer, the levels of PSA in the blood increase, which happens because the cancer breaks down the prostate tissue, which in turn causes more PSA to leak into the blood.
PSA limit value - according to the Swedish national care program for prostate cancer:
Symptoms of prostate cancer may be one or more of the following:
These symptoms can also have other causes than prostate cancer, such as a benign enlargement of the prostate gland, which is common in people over 60.
If prostate cancer has spread, other symptoms such as bone pain without injury or fatigue and loss of appetite may occur.
