Blood test for syphilis (IgM and IgG)
This blood test analyzes both IgM and IgG antibodies against Treponema pallidum – the bacterium that causes syphilis. The test can identify both an ongoing infection (via IgM) and previously experienced or latent syphilis (via IgG). The combination of IgM and IgG provides a broader picture of infection status over time.
The test result is reported discreetly and privately in the sexual health service and is not shared with the medical records on 1177Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease that often causes vague or no symptoms in the early stages, but which without treatment can cause serious health problems. The blood test is suitable for those who have had unprotected sex, have symptoms such as sores, rash or fever, or want to include the test in a general STI check.
Symptoms and complications of syphilis
Syphilis can cause a painless sore on the genitals or in the mouth a few weeks after infection, sometimes accompanied by swollen lymph nodes. At a later stage, fever, rash and general malaise may occur. Some people do not experience any clear symptoms at all. Without treatment, syphilis can eventually cause serious damage to the nervous system and internal organs, and the infection can also be transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy.
The analysis is carried out by accredited Swedish laboratories and provides a reliable answer that can form the basis for any further care and treatment.
