Do you suspect a peanut allergy?
One of the most common allergies is peanut allergy, which can also be very serious. Peanut allergy means that a person has a hypersensitivity to proteins found in peanuts. In most cases, an allergic reaction occurs when you eat them, or if you accidentally eat foods that contain or have been in contact with peanuts. If you are allergic and exposed to peanuts through the air or skin, it rarely causes serious reactions.
Peanuts belong to the legume family and are not a typical nut. This means that even if the test shows a peanut allergy, it does not automatically mean that the person is allergic to other nuts.
Allergy test to diagnose peanut allergy
This allergy test measures the levels of specific antibodies in the blood, known as IgE antibodies, that are associated with an allergic reaction to peanuts. The antibodies are produced by the immune system in response to exposure to peanut proteins. By analyzing the levels of these antibodies, it is possible to identify whether you are allergic to peanuts and further possibly assess the degree of the allergy.
Symptoms of peanut allergy
In the case of an allergic reaction to peanut, symptoms are often experienced within a few minutes. Here are some of the most common symptoms of peanut allergy:
- Red rash, itching, swelling and redness of the skin can occur with an allergy to peanuts. Hives or eczema may also occur.
- Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea can be symptoms of an allergic reaction to peanuts.
- Difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, wheezing or wheezing sounds when breathing and coughing can occur with an allergic reaction.
- Swelling of the lips, tongue, face or throat, which can be potentially dangerous if it affects breathing or causes difficulty swallowing.
- Anaphylaxis: Serious and life-threatening condition that can involve multiple organ systems. Symptoms may include sudden difficulty breathing, rapid pulse, dizziness, loss of consciousness and shock. Anaphylaxis requires immediate medical attention.
By completing this allergy test, you can gain a better understanding of peanut allergy and take the necessary steps to manage the allergy safely. However, it is important to note that your individual test results for peanut allergy should be discussed with an allergist who can give you individual advice on any further investigations.
