How does the blood test take place?
Sampling for this test is done via a venous blood sample. The sample is usually taken from a vein in the crook of the elbow and is performed by trained healthcare professionals. ALT, Alanine aminotransferase, is an enzyme found, among other things, inside the cells of the liver. In an inflamed or irritated liver, ALT can leak into the blood. The ALT value is therefore often analyzed together with other blood tests to diagnose and monitor liver diseases.

It is relatively common to have high liver values as an adult, where ALT can be one of them, without experiencing symptoms. Most of the time, elevated ALT values are temporary and go away on their own unless it is due to an underlying cause of a serious illness.
