Recently, it has been noted that missed tumors are the most common reason behind lex Maria notifications in primary care. It is a serious reminder of how difficult it can sometimes be to detect disease at an early stage – especially when the symptoms are diffuse, come on insidiously or resemble common and harmless ailments.

As a doctor, I also want to be clear that the vast majority of symptoms are not due to cancer. Fatigue, stomach problems, aches or changes in the body often have completely different explanations. But there are also situations where the body is trying to signal that something is not right, and where further investigation may be important.

In healthcare, we often encounter patients who have felt for a long time that "something doesn't feel right", even though initial tests were normal or the symptoms were difficult to pinpoint. This may include unexplained weight loss, recurring pain, prolonged cough, changed bowel habits, blood in urine or stool, persistent fatigue or other symptoms that do not go away.

The challenge is that many serious diseases develop gradually. Early changes are not always visible in regular blood tests and can sometimes require imaging or further examinations to be discovered.

That does not mean that everyone needs to undergo extensive examinations. Medicine is always about weighing benefit against risk and doing the right test for the right person at the right time. But that means we need to take people's concerns, symptoms and changes seriously - especially when something feels different over time.

I believe that accessibility and the ability to evaluate symptoms early play an important role in the future of care. For many patients, an examination not only means the opportunity to detect illness, but also to receive reassuring information and be able to move forward with confidence.

At the Test Clinic, we work to make medical examinations and health checks more accessible. We offer blood tests and various types of examinations that can help detect changes in the body and provide a basis for further medical assessment if necessary.

The most important message I want to send is simple: get to know your body, seek medical attention if symptoms persist, and dare to follow up on things that don't feel normal to you. Early detection can make a big difference in many cases.

About Lex Maria: Lex Maria is a Swedish patient safety regulation requiring healthcare providers to report serious incidents or risks of harm in healthcare to the Health and Social Care Inspectorate (IVO). The purpose is to improve patient safety and prevent similar events from happening again.
