Description

Transferrin is a protein that transports iron in the blood. Transferrin is measured in cases of suspected iron deficiency or hemochromatosis, which is a hereditary liver disease that leads to the absorption of too much iron from food and which, after many years, can lead to excess iron in the body.

This is how it works: The test is a blood test that is carried out at the selected sampling unit.

Sample response: You normally have a response within 6 working days after taking the sample. The test answer is sent digitally to your e-mail. In case of major deviations from the reference value, the doctor will call you.

To think about: Before taking the sample, you should avoid eating (10 hours), also abstain from alcohol the day before taking the sample. It is important to completely avoid anti-inflammatory drugs, pain or fever reducers or a recently completed antibiotic treatment before sampling.

Remember: Bring valid identification with you when taking the sample.

Information

Transferrin and iron concentration calculate iron binding capacity (TIBC)

Transferrin is normally saturated to about a third of iron as it binds iron with very high affinity and is responsible for iron transport in blood plasma. The process is dependent on the availability of iron and takes place above all in the hepatocytes.

The transferrin value should not be measured in isolation as it becomes very difficult to assess because, for example, iron deficiency, inflammation, alcohol intake and pregnancy affect homeostasis in different ways. When analyzing both transferrin and iron concentration, it is possible to calculate the total iron-binding capacity, TIBC.

Calculated iron-binding capacity (TIBC) and transferrin saturation can be used together in the investigation of unclear anemia and to assess iron stores in the investigation of hemochromatosis, as well as to follow therapy response to an iron treatment.

Hemochromatosis – iron excess

In hemochromatosis, the body absorbs too much iron from food, this can lead to iron excess after many years. Haemochromatosis is a hereditary liver disease where you have to inherit the condition from both parents.

The symptoms of hemochromatosis are increased fatigue, however, it is unusual to notice the disease at the beginning. It is only after several years that physical symptoms appear when the iron storage has become pronounced, then the liver is the first organ in the body to be affected.
