Description

Calcium is a vital mineral which, among other things, is needed for the body's bones, teeth and blood coagulation. Our body consists of approx. 1-2% calcium, of which approx. 1% circulates in the blood and approx. 99% is bound in bones and teeth.

The concentration of calcium in blood is strictly regulated by the skeleton, intestines and kidneys. Too much or too little calcium in the blood can cause, among other things, osteoporosis, hypercalcemia and kidney damage.

This is how it works: The test is a blood test that is carried out at the selected sampling unit.

Sample response: You normally have a response within 6 banking days after taking the sample. The test answer is sent digitally to your e-mail. Together with your test results, you will receive a report in English about your values and the doctor's comment.

Remember: Bring valid identification with you when taking the sample.

Information

About calcium

Calcium is an important mineral for our muscles, nerves and heart. We get calcium through most foods today, mainly found in milk products, leafy vegetables and various nuts. For vegetarians or vegans, there is often added calcium in other alternatives to milk.

How much calcium we need to take in differs depending on both age and gender. For women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, the recommended daily intake is 900 milligrams, for men and women who are not pregnant or breastfeeding, the recommended daily intake is 800 milligrams.

What does a low or high value of calcium mean?

A low value of calcium can cause a calcium deficiency which, when it has been prolonged, can cause osteoporosis in adults.

A high value of calcium can occur in the event of an overdose of calcium, which can occur through the intake of dietary supplements. Together with a high intake of vitamin D, it can lead to hypercalcaemia, calcification of the body's tissues, kidney stones and kidney damage.
