Aldosterone blood test to understand the cause of blood pressure and salt balance
Do you suspect that your high blood pressure, fatigue, dizziness or potassium disorders may be due to a hormonal imbalance? Then a test for the hormone aldosterone can provide important answers. With us you can easily order a referral for P-Aldosterone (together with renin) at the market's most competitive price. Analyzed at accredited Swedish laboratories for maximum security.
Aldosterone is a hormone produced in the adrenal glands and plays a crucial role in regulating blood pressure and the balance between salt, water and potassium in the body. When aldosterone is too high or too low, it can affect both circulation, energy and fluid balance, which can cause symptoms such as high blood pressure, muscle weakness, headaches or dizziness.
Testing your aldosterone level provides important information that can help you and your doctor understand whether your symptoms are due to a hormonal disorder – for example, primary hyperaldosteronism (Conn’s syndrome), one of the most common hormonal causes of high blood pressure.
Why is it important to test aldosterone?
Aldosterone controls how much sodium and water the body retains, and how much potassium is excreted. A high value can lead to increased blood pressure and low potassium, while low levels can cause low blood pressure, fatigue and salt cravings. Therefore, the hormone is central to the investigation of blood pressure problems and electrolyte disorders.
Note that an analysis of aldosterone is recommended to be carried out together with P-Renin, since the ratio between these two hormones (ARR ratio) provides a clearer picture of how the RAAS system is functioning and whether further investigation may be needed.
Who should test their aldosterone?
It may be appropriate to test aldosterone if you:
- have high blood pressure that is difficult to control
- are younger and suddenly develop hypertension
- have low or unclearly disturbed potassium levels
- suspect a hormonal cause for blood pressure problems
- have symptoms such as muscle weakness, headache, palpitations or pronounced fatigue
Just a few minutes after your purchase, you can activate your referral and visit one of our sample collection clinics. Your results are delivered with a clear and medically explained interpretation.
Analysis at an accredited laboratory
All samples are analyzed at Swedish accredited laboratories with the highest quality assurance. This means that you get results you can trust – no matter where in the country you have your blood test.
What do normal and abnormal aldosterone levels mean?
Normal aldosterone levels vary, among other things, depending on the body position when the test is taken (standing or lying down), as well as on the renin levels that are measured at the same time. Elevated aldosterone levels together with low renin may indicate primary hyperaldosteronism, while low aldosterone in combination with high renin may indicate adrenal insufficiency or another disorder in the RAAS system.
Conditions that affect aldosterone can cause symptoms such as:
- high blood pressure (sometimes difficult to treat)
- muscle weakness and fatigue
- headache
- palpitations
- dizziness, especially with low blood pressure
