MRCP – detailed examination of the bile ducts and pancreas
An MRCP (Magnetic Resonance Cholangiopancreatography) is a specialized magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination that focuses on the bile ducts and pancreas. Unlike a general abdominal MRI, which examines several organs at the same time, MRCP is specifically designed to provide very detailed images of the bile ducts and pancreatic ducts – without the need for contrast media.
The examination is used to detect obstructions, gallstones, inflammation or other changes that may affect the flow of bile or the function of the pancreas. Today, MRCP is one of the most accurate and gentle methods for investigating these conditions.
When is MRCP recommended?
MRCP is particularly appropriate when problems with the biliary tract or pancreas are suspected, or when previous examinations have not provided sufficient information.
- Unexplained pain in the upper abdomen
- Elevated liver or biliary tract tests (e.g. ALP, GT, bilirubin)
- Suspected gallstones in the bile ducts
- Recurrent pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
- Jaundice (icterus) without a clear cause
- Abnormal findings on ultrasound or CT
MRCP is often used when suspected of:
- Gallstones in the bile ducts (choledochal calculi).
- Narrowings or blockages in the bile ducts.
- Inflammation of the bile ducts or pancreas (e.g. cholangitis or pancreatitis).
- Cysts or tumor changes in the pancreas.
- Congenital abnormalities of the bile or pancreatic ducts.
- Follow-up after previous illness or intervention in the bile ducts/pancreas.
The difference between MRCP and MR Abdominal
MRCP is a targeted examination that focuses only on the bile ducts and pancreas, while MR Abdominal provides a broader overview of several organs such as the liver, kidneys and spleen. In many questions concerning bile flow or pancreatic function, the radiologist chooses to prioritize an MRCP, as it provides better detail for these structures. Therefore, an ordered abdominal MRI can sometimes be changed to MRCP to ensure a more accurate diagnosis.
Book MRCP – high precision without radiation
The examination usually takes 20–30 minutes and is performed in a lying position. MRCP is completely painless and does not use X-rays. Since the technique uses the body's natural fluids as contrast, no contrast agent is usually needed.
The images are analyzed by a specialist doctor and you will receive a medical opinion within a few days after the examination.
Dialogue with a doctor is always included before the MRCP
When booking an MRCP, a consultation with one of our doctors is always included. During the conversation, we will review your symptoms, your medical background and relevant test results to ensure that MRCP is the right examination for you.
In some cases, we can recommend another examination – or confirm that MRCP is the most accurate choice. This medical assessment is an important part of achieving high diagnostic accuracy and safe care.
When is an MRCP not suitable?
MRCP is a targeted examination and is not suitable for a broad survey of all abdominal organs or for investigating problems from the gastrointestinal tract. In the case of symptoms that primarily concern the stomach or intestines, such as changed bowel habits, blood in the stool or prolonged diarrhea, other investigations should be prioritized - for example, colonoscopy or contact with a doctor for further assessment.
