What is important to consider before an MRI examination?
Before an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) examination, it is important that you follow certain safety regulations to ensure that the examination can be carried out safely and with the best possible image quality.
Implants and medical devices
You must notify us if you have any type of implant, such as a pacemaker, neurostimulator, pain pump or metal clip. Even MR-compatible implants require that we receive information about the manufacturer and model in advance. This is crucial for your safety.
Clothing and metal objects
Anything containing metal must be removed before the examination – jewelry, piercings, watches, hairpins and sometimes even makeup. You may change into MRI-safe clothing without zippers, snaps or metal threads.
Infusions and equipment
Any infusion tubes, pumps and other equipment that are not needed during the examination should be removed. If anything must remain, special MRI-adapted equipment should be used. Contact your healthcare provider if you are unsure.
Physical ability and stillness
You must be able to lie completely still for 30–60 minutes. If you have severe pain or anxiety, your care department can provide pain relief or sedatives in advance. Fluid-draining medication should be avoided on the same day as the examination.
Other medical conditions
If you have a fever, need for monitoring, or if a PVK (peripheral venous catheter) is to be used during the examination – contact the MRI department before the visit for special instructions.
Accompanying persons
If staff or relatives are to accompany you into the MRI room, they must also complete a security form and ensure that they do not have any metal objects on them
