An ultrasound examination or sonography is a safe, painless and radiation-free method that provides detailed images of the body's organs, joints, vessels and soft tissues. Ultrasound is used to examine all parts of the body that contain fluid and are not obscured by bone or air. The examination can detect abnormalities that are not always visible on a regular plain X-ray.
