MRI of the temporomandibular joints – Examination for pain, clicking or locking in the jaw
Problems with the temporomandibular joints (TMD) are common and can cause pain, clicking sounds, locking or reduced mobility in the jaw. Many people also experience headaches, tenderness in the jaw muscles, earache or difficulty chewing. When symptoms do not go away or there is suspicion of structural damage to the temporomandibular joint, an MRI examination is recommended.
MRI is the most detailed and gentle method for examining the temporomandibular joints. The examination shows cartilage discs (disks), joint surface, synovial fluid, inflammatory changes and possible displacement or degeneration. It is used for both acute symptoms and chronic problems, as well as before surgery or bite physiologic treatment.
When is an MRI of the temporomandibular joints recommended?
MRI of the temporomandibular joints is recommended for long-term or worsening temporomandibular joint problems, especially when X-rays or clinical examination are not sufficient to establish a diagnosis.
- Pain or tenderness in the temporomandibular joint when chewing or yawning
- Cracking, cracking or clicking sounds in the jaw
- Temporomandibular joint that locks or jumps out of position
- Impaired ability to yawn or restricted movement
- Suspected disc displacement or osteoarthritis
- Headache, earache or facial pain of unclear cause
MRI is often used when the following conditions are suspected in TMJ
- Disc dislocation – displacement of the cartilage disc of the TMJ
- Temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD)
- Osteoarthritis or joint surface degeneration
- Inflammatory conditions such as arthritis or synovitis
- Internal TMJ injury after trauma or overload
- Before orthodontic or jaw surgery treatment
