MRI Cervical Spine – Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Neck Pain, Stiffness or Nerve Symptoms in the Arms and Hands
Pain in the neck that radiates into the shoulders, arms or fingers may indicate pressure on nerve roots in the cervical spine. Stiffness, numbness, weakness or balance problems may also originate from changes in the cervical spine. MRI cervical spine is a gentle and very detailed imaging method used to map the causes of these symptoms – regardless of whether they are due to herniated discs, osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis or inflammation.
The examination provides detailed images of the cervical vertebrae, discs, spinal cord, nerve roots and surrounding soft tissues. Since MRI does not use X-rays, it is also suitable for repeated examinations or for patients where radiation freedom is especially important.
When is an MRI of the cervical spine recommended?
A cervical spine MRI is recommended for long-term or recurring neck pain, especially if it is combined with neurological symptoms. It is also used to evaluate previous injuries, investigate changes seen on X-rays, or for planned surgery.
- Neck pain that does not go away with rest or treatment
- Radiating pain, numbness or tingling in the arms or hands
- Muscle weakness or loss of sensation in the upper extremities
- Impaired mobility or stiffness in the neck
- Suspected herniated disc, spinal stenosis or inflammatory disease
- Follow-up of previous neck injuries, whiplash or surgery
MRI is often used when the following conditions are suspected in the cervical spine
- Herniated disc with pressure on nerve roots or spinal cord
- Cervical spinal stenosis – narrowing of the spinal canal
- Degenerative changes – such as spondylosis or facet joint osteoarthritis
- Inflammatory diseases – such as rheumatoid condition
- Whiplash-related injuries or spinal instability
- Tumors, infections or bone marrow involvement in the cervical spine
