MRI Ears – Magnetic resonance imaging examination for hearing loss, tinnitus or dizziness
Hearing loss, tinnitus, dizziness or balance problems can originate in the inner ear or the auditory and balance nerve (nervus vestibulocochlearis). MRI ears are the best imaging method for visualizing the structures of the inner ear and identifying changes that are not visible on regular X-rays or during hearing tests.
The examination provides very detailed images of the inner ear's cochlea, auditory canals, auditory canal and the course of the auditory nerve towards the brainstem. MRI is particularly useful in cases of suspected acoustic neuroma (a benign tumor of the auditory nerve), inner ear infections, inflammation or malformations of the inner ear.
When is an MRI of the ears recommended?
MRI of the ears is recommended when you have hearing symptoms without a clear cause or when the symptoms indicate that the change is in the inner ear or auditory nerve. It is also a common examination before possible surgery or cochlear implantation.
- Hearing loss – especially unilateral or sudden
- Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) – unilateral or difficult to assess
- Dizziness or recurrent balance disorders
- Suspected acoustic neuroma or other tumor of the auditory nerve
- Investigation before cochlear implant or surgery in the middle/inner ear
- Infections, malformations or fluid in the inner ear
MRI is often used when the following conditions in the ears are suspected
- Acoustic neuroma (vestibular schwannoma)
- Labyrinthitis – inflammation of the inner ear
- Deformities in the inner ear's gait system
- Tumor in ear canal or internal auditory canal
- Cochlear ossification after infection or injury
- Menière's disease (in selected cases to exclude other causes)
Book MRI Ears – Referral issued immediately
An MRI examination of the ears takes approximately 20–30 minutes and is completely painless. The examination is performed in a lying position and provides clear insight into the cause of your hearing or balance problems. You do not need your own referral – we will arrange it directly in connection with your booking. A statement from a specialist is included.
