Can I have an MRI if I have claustrophobia?

Yes, it is common for people with claustrophobia to have an MRI without any problems – especially with the right support and preparation. The MRI camera is cramped and some may experience discomfort from lying still in a closed space. However, there are several ways to make the experience safer.

At the Test Clinic, you can already inform us that you have claustrophobia when you activate the referral. We will then take extra care when booking, and in many cases you can be laid feet first or undergo an examination in an open MRI camera (based on availability).

It is also possible to receive sedative medication in consultation with a doctor before the examination. In addition, you can contact the staff via microphone and speaker, and can interrupt the examination at any time if it feels too uncomfortable.

For the vast majority of people with mild to moderate claustrophobia, MRI works very well – especially with clear information and safe communication before the examination.
