Can you have an MRI if you have implants?
Yes, it is often possible to have an MRI scan even though you have implants, but it depends entirely on the type of implant. Since MRI uses strong magnetic fields, some metal objects in the body can be affected, which makes it important to always inform your healthcare provider in advance.
Examples of implants that are usually MR safe (fully or under certain conditions) include:
- Joint replacements (hip, knee)
- Orthodontic implants (dental implants)
- Stents, clips, and some modern heart valve implants
- IUDs and some hormonal IUDs
Implants that may pose a risk and require special consideration include:
- Pacemakers and defibrillators
- Older metal clips (especially in the brain)
- Cochlear implants (non-surgical hearing aids)
Before the examination, you will be asked to complete a safety questionnaire. If in doubt, manufacturer specifications will be checked or you may be asked to bring an implant card. We will help you determine if MRI is appropriate in your particular case.
