Quick version
NIPT is a simple and completely safe blood test that cannot harm the fetus. With us, you can easily book online and have the test taken at Karolinska-affiliated clinics in Stockholm. The analysis is performed by the Karolinska University Laboratory, which guarantees high quality and reliable answers within 5–10 days.
Where do I book an NIPT test in Stockholm?
You can easily book your NIPT test online via our website. We offer NIPT in Greater Stockholm and the surrounding area, where the sample is taken at local laboratories and healthcare facilities affiliated with the Karolinska University Laboratory. Since the analyses are only performed by Karolinska in the region, you receive a process that is both medically quality assured and safe. Karolinska uses validated methods for analyzing cell-free DNA and has extensive experience in genetic laboratory analyses, which means high diagnostic certainty.

What is NIPT and why choose it?
NIPT (Non-Invasive Prenatal Test) is a blood sample that is taken from the pregnant woman from week 10 of pregnancy. Small amounts of cell-free DNA from the fetus circulate in the blood, which can be analyzed with advanced sequencing technology. This way, common chromosomal abnormalities that affect fetal development can be detected, especially:
- Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome)
- Trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome)
- Trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome)
In some cases, the analysis can also provide information about the sex chromosomes. However, NIPT is a screening test – a positive result always needs to be followed up with a diagnostic test, such as amniocentesis or placental sampling, to be confirmed. Read more about the NIPT test for more detailed information.
The great value of NIPT is that it is:
- Completely safe for both mother and child – only a blood sample from the mother's arm is required, no invasive procedures that can increase the risk of miscarriage.
- Reliable – NIPT has very high sensitivity and specificity for trisomy 21 and provides a significantly higher accuracy than traditional biochemical screening tests (such as KUB).
- Early response – from as early as week 10 of pregnancy you can receive information about the fetus's chromosome set.
- Reduced need for risky examinations – thanks to the high reliability, many women can avoid amniocentesis or placental sampling that would otherwise have been offered in cases of increased risk.
Do I need to do KUB before NIPT?
Many people mistakenly believe that you must do a KUB test before you can do NIPT. This is not true. You can book and carry out an NIPT test directly without first having done KUB. However, it is important to know that the sample can be taken from the 10th week of pregnancy at the earliest, since the amount of cell-free DNA from the fetus in the mother's blood must be sufficient for the analysis to be reliable.
KUB (Combined Ultrasound and Biochemistry) is a traditional screening test that combines blood tests and ultrasound. KUB has a lower accuracy rate than NIPT, but is still used in parts of public healthcare. Many pregnant women therefore choose to go directly to NIPT to get more reliable answers and avoid an extra step.
How does the booking work?
The booking is made directly via our website. You choose the time and place for the sample to be taken among the Karolinska-affiliated clinics in Stockholm. The blood sample itself is taken in just a few minutes by trained healthcare personnel. The sample is then sent to the Karolinska University Laboratory where it is analyzed using advanced genetic technology. You will receive your results within approximately 5–10 working days along with a medical assessment. In the event of deviant findings, there is always the opportunity for further genetic counseling and follow-up.
